Mange - Mange comes in three varieties: Cheyletiella, Demodectic, and Sarcoptic. What distinguishes one type of mange from another is the species of mites that infects your dog.
The first, Cheyletiella mange is commonly referred to as "walking dandruff" named because of the distinctive dusting of dandruff that appears on a dogs back, neck, and head. It is a mild condition due to the mite's short life span; however it is highly contagious for other dogs.
The second type of mange is called Demodectic Mange. Demodectic Mange is caused by a mite known as "Demodex canis" and can only be identified by microscopic analysis. The mite is normally found throughout a puppy's skin, however for unknown reasons can spontaneously manifest and lower your dog's resistance. It is most commonly found in puppies between the ages if four to twelve months. The exact symtoms of Demodectic Mange includes reduction of hair specifically around the eyes and mouth and sometimes on the front legs.
